If your Seagate external drive is not working and no light is flashing, then your disk might be at risk. You have to follow some troubleshooting steps to clear this issue. Basic hard drive checkup

  1. First, connect the Seagate External Hard Drive to your Windows computer via the supplied USB cable. 
  2. If your hard drive has a Power Button, press it to turn ON the drive.
  3. If there is no light flashing on the drive, unplug the USB cable.
  4. Connect the new USB cable to the drive and the other end to the computer USB port.
  5. Check if the drive light flashes and the Drive Icon appears on the Windows computer.
  6. If the problem remains, connect the USB cable to another USB port on the computer.

  1. Make sure that the Windows computer is Turned On and the Seagate external drive is connected to the computer.
  2. Click the Start icon, type “device manager” in the search box, and press the Enter key.
  3. Now, the Device Manager window will appear; click to Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  4. Now, right-click the USB Root Hub Option and then click on Properties.
  5. In the new dialog box that displays, click the Power Management Tab.
  6. Click the checkbox for Allow the computer to Turn Off this device to save power and then click OK.
  7. Finally, restart your Windows computer and check if the Seagate Hard Drive is detected or not.

Steps to format and allocate space for the external drive

  1. If your device starts working, take a backup and then format your drive.
  2. Follow the below steps to format your drive.     
  3. On the Windows computer, right-click the Start Icon and then click Disk Management from the list.
  4. Before formatting your drive, take a backup. 
  5. Next, on the Disk Management screen, right-click on the Seagate drive and then click Format or Delete Volume.
  6. Once the formatting is complete, you have to allocate memory for your Seagate Drive.
  7. Right-click on the drive icon and then click on New Simple Volume.
  8. Now, in the New Simple Volume Wizard, click Next.
  9. In the Specify Volume Size window, type the volume below the maximum disk space in MB in the Simple volume size in the MB text field and then click Next.
  10. In the next window, click the Assign the following drive letter Radio Button to select the drive letter from the list and click Next.
  11. In the Format Partition window, click the Format the volume with the following settings radio button, then select NTFS in the File System drop-down box. 
  12. Now, click Next and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the partition process.
